The Nation's Leader in Payroll Education!

Payroll Professional of the Year

Bonnie Downey, CPP

It is my pleasure to not only be able to present the very first Alamo Chapter Payroll Professional of the Year award, but to be presenting it to this recipient in particular. This year’s recipient fell into payroll just as most of us will say we did and has been in the profession for over 20 years. She has been with her current employer for over 16 years and is responsible for processing payroll for over 2,800 employees along with management of the HRIS system. She says that her most significant contribution to the payroll profession was when she mentored a previous employee who was payroll supervisor at the time to filling the payroll manager position upon leaving the company. She accredits Paula-Gold Williams, her first boss, as being the person that most inspired her stating that Paula encouraged her to join the Alamo Chapter and to obtain her CPP. Paula recognized her potential and pushed her to step out of her comfort zone.

Co-workers recognize her as the team player that you want on your team when navigating through uncharted areas and are in need of expertise, leadership, and problem solving. She leads a team that believes in collaboration with all areas and providing the best customer service of a payroll department that has been seen in his 30+ years of accounting. She is positive, pleasant and uplifting….noone nicer to work with and call a friend at the same time.

In addition to being a Payroll Manager, she has served as Speaker Coordinator, President-Elect and President for the Alamo Chapter APA and volunteered at the Texas Payroll Conference. She is currently serving on the Texas Attorney General’s Employer’s Task Force for Garnishments. She has given her time in our community to United Way, Meals on Wheels, MS-150 and Communities in Schools where she mentors at-risk students at Harlandale school district.

This person believes that being named the payroll professional of the year would show her how much other’s believe in her and acknowledge that she deserves to be recognized for her accomplishments in the payroll profession. I personally can attest that she adores her job and intends to remain in the payroll profession until she retires because she is currently my manager at Holt CAT.

It is my honor to recognize Bonnie Downey, CPP as the Alamo Chapter Payroll Professional of the Year!
