Many opportunities with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) signed into law in late December 2017 resulted in payroll professionals scrambling to deal the normal year-end issues and deadlines in January 2018 as well as starting 2018 with the most comprehensive tax changes in 30 years. The Alamo Chapter revised our meeting schedule quickly to present more information to our membership on the TCJA changes as we were all seeking clarification on what was and wasn’t included in the final legislation.
In 2018, the ACAPA board remains committed to providing you with current and critical educational topics. We are also committed to adding new programs for our members to advance their payroll education and have announced 2 new award programs. The first is the Payroll Professional of the Year – Alamo Chapter (PPY) that recognizes a tenured San Antonio area payroll professional with a CPP designation who gives back to the payroll profession as well as local, state and national payroll volunteer service. The second award is the Sharon Tuch Memorial Scholarship that awards a chapter membership and the following year’s educational meeting free to the recipient as a way to recognize individuals dedicated to the Payroll Profession and encourage their educational advancement through opportunities provided in San Antonio. More information on these awards is located on our website at www.apasanantonio.com under Membership, Member Awards Opportunities. Deadlines are fast approaching!
We are also going GREEN with our surveys and RCH certificates in 2018. Instead of paper copies to keep track of each meeting, we will email attendees from our website with the APA-approved RCH form and our meeting survey. The meeting survey is very important to us because we want to evaluate our speakers and topics, but we also want your input on new topics. We want to hear from you! We have created new marketing materials in the form of both a flyer and brochure to promote our chapter.
In 2017, our chapter exceeded our membership goal of 150 members with 153 members for the calendar year. Our membership continues to be strong and, as of March 31, we had 111 renewed or new members already. If you haven’t yet renewed or want to join, visit our website Home page and following the link on the left side of the screen. Our meeting attendance in 2017 was almost 70 attendees average per meeting but, in 2018, the to-date average is 71 attendees.
The Alamo Chapter Board is also proud to premier our Fiesta medal for 2018. Our April 19th Fiesta Fandango celebration from 5-8 p.m. at the Casa Azul de Andrea will kick off the Fiesta season in San Antonio and for our chapter. Registration for the event is online under Meetings. Space is limited so please sign up early to join our fun. ACAPA members plus 1 guest are free; non-members are $20 per person. Come join the fun and wear your Fiesta best!
The CPP/FPC Study Group kicks off on May 23rd for our 13 week instructed classes from 6-8 p.m. at the Execupay offices. We will also have an additional 3 week review sessions prior to the opening of the Fall 2018 testing windows. Registration is open now, but class size is limited so don’t wait to register.
Finally, I am so pleased to serve as your Chapter President. We have a fantastic membership, an award-winning chapter, and excellent educational topics and speakers. But the board could not do what we do without your support and commitment to our chapter. Thank you for all you do and happy Quarter 1 of 2018
